Contribution to the history of
WESTCHESTER CO., N. Y. The Original enlistment papers of a troop of Col. Emmerick's dragoons, enlisted in Westchester County, in 1778 and 1779, were recently shown me by a gentleman resident in that County, to whom they belonged. They are fifty in number, in perfect preservation, printed on a single page of foolscap size, the blanks filled up by the enlisting officer, and are all signed by the respective men; a minority only making their marks. Immediately following is the certificate of the Justice of the Peace, before whom the enlistment was signed, and the oath of fidelity taken, who in almost every instance was David Oakley a well known old Westchester name.
The following is a perfect copy of one of the papers, the italics denoting the blanks in the original filled up in writing. " I Gilbert Lounsbury, of the County of Westchester in New York Gavernmenty aged 25 years, by trade a carpenter, declare that I am a true and lawful subject to his Majesty King George the Third, and that I have no Rupture, nor ever was troubled with Fits; that I am not disabled by lameness or otherwise, and that I have voluntarily inlisted myself to serve his Majesty King Ceorge the Third, as a Private Dragoon during the present Rebellion or Disturbance in America, in a corps of Provincial Chasseurs, whereof Andreas Emmerick Esq,, is
Lt, Col, Commander, and that I have received the enlisting moneys I agreed for.
Witness my Hand this 10 Day of May,
1877. Gilbert J.ounsbury."
" This is to certify that tlie above-named Gilbert Lounsbury came before me, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the County of Westchester, and declared he had voluntarily inlisted himself to serve his Majesty King George the Third, in the above mentioned Corps of Provincial Chasseurs, and doth acknowledge to have heard read unto him the Second and Sixth Sections of the Articles of War, against Mutiny and Desertion, and took the oath of Fidelity mentioned in the Articles of War.
Sworn before me, this first Day of August, 1778.
David Oakley, Justice."
Of the fifty in the annexed list,thirty-four are those of Westchester men, and they are so familiar at this day, that they read like the jury lists published in the Whiteplains paper now. There is no county in the Union where the old people have stuck to their old homes more closely than in Westchester, and as every family had members on each side in the Revolution, and in many cases on both sides alternately, this fact is not at all singular. As to their occupations they were "husbandmen " and mechanics, the former slightly the more numerous, and their ages varied from seventeen to forty.
There were in the troop, one New York City man, one Long Islander from Queens County, one man from Fairfield, now Bridgeport, in Connecticut, two Pennsylvanians, two Jerseymen, six natives of " Old England," which term was universally used in, and before the Revolution to distinguish Englishmen born in England, from those born in America, for both were " Englishmen,'* of course, in fact and in law. And there was also one trooper described as "of the Empire of Germany."
The list of the troop is carefully made from the original documents. It is very interesting, and strikingly illustrative of the famous "Neutral Ground" of history, romance, and song. The commander of the troop was Captain Benjamin Ogden, many of the enlistment papers bearing his name endorsed upon them.
Natives of Westchester:
Shubal Kniffin, John Brown, Philip Hunt, Jacob Van Tassel, Anthony Beatlebum, Gilbert Lounsbury, Benjamin Golden, Stephen Smith, William Akerly, John Baisley, James Simmons, Jesse Purdy, David Lyons, Reuben Akerly, Robert Crooker, Joseph McKeel, Shubal Merrit, Gilbert Deane, Stephen Sherwood, Caleb Griffin,
William Davenport, Thomas Bird, Abraham Brundige, Thomas Briggs, John Vail, Joseph Sutton, Nehemiah Marshall, Abraham Akerly, Thomas Green, Samuel Cornell, Benjamin Castin, Gilbert Dickinson, John Anderson, Joshua Taylor.

All but one of the surviving evacuation lists for the migration to the future Saint John pertain to households of civiliam Loyalists. No ship musters have been discovered for Loyalists who were still serving in the various Provincial (that is, Loyalist) regiments at the point in 1783 when they were shipped northward to demobilize.

[Episcopal] |
- The first four children of Joseph Seeley and Thankful Bartlett were baptized in the Congregational Church in New Milford, the last in 1741. But there is no mention of the last five children. The first Episcopal Church in New Milford was built in 1743, although it was serviced by a minister from Roxbury. A permanent minister in New Milford didn't come until later and records of baptisms, marriages and burials did not begin until after 1800.
The Joseph Seeley family was probably Episcopal. Son Ephraim Seeley's children were baptized in the Episcopal Church in Gagetown. Ephraim Richmond, grandson of Joseph Seeley was often mentioned in the early records of St John's Episcopal of New Milford. So it is possible that the family subscribed to the Congregational Church in New Milford until there was an Episcopal Church established there. It is too bad that there are no records of early baptisms, marriages and burials by the ministers and missionaries of the Church of England who first came to New Milford. The remaining Seeley children--Joseph, Thankful, Justus, Keziah and Ephraim--were probably baptized by one of those missionaries or ministers. In fact, it is possible that Ephraim and Anna Seeley were married in the Episcopal Church too.

Military |
- The history Ephraim Seeley's Revolutionary War service is long and contradictory. His service began in 1777 as a Rebel enlisted for a bounty, continued as a scout for the British, and ended by mustering out in Canada after the war was over. It is difficult to say what swayed Ephraim to choose the sides he did, when he did. Certainly the pay for service in the Connecticut Militia for Stratford was a motivator, as well as the resolve of the Town to support the Rebel cause. And after the Americans losing numerous battles in 1778, Ephraim may have known what was good for him and enlisted with the King's army. For whatever the reasons, Ephraim's military record shows that he was neither a zealous Rebel nor a fervent Loyalist, but a certain kind of pragmatist.
Ephraim Seeley enlisted for the town of Stratford, probably in 1777. His enlistment date is given as 22 February 1777, in the muster rolls of Capt Robert Warner's Company, but doesn't appear on muster rolls for that company until late summer 1778. The name Ephraim Seeley appears twice on a list of men in the 4th Brigade of the Connecticut Militia commanded by Colonel Samuel Whiting. In both instances, the Ephraim belonged to Stratford, in two different companies. One company was led by Capt Abraham Brinsmade of Stratford. There are no records detailing these early militias, but Capt Brinsmade's company was present for the Raid on Danbury by the British in April 1777. Capt Brinsmade disappears from the Connecticut military record after the Raid. The other company with an Ephraim Seeley was led by Captains Booth and Nichols. I was unable to identify either of these in later military records. Colonel Whiting commanded the 4th Connecticut for most of the remainder of the war. In any case, both of these Ephraims were likely the same man, and identical to our Ephraim.
Ephraim next shows up on a muster roll of Captain Robert Warner's Company. This unit was commanded by Colonel Samuel Wyllys. It belonged to the 3rd Regiment in the Connecticut Line, part of the Continental Army in 1778. The company camped at several locations in Connecticut and New York during Ephraim's service, inluding White Plains, Fredericksburgh, Reading and New Milford.
From December 1778 through March 1779, Ephraim was on duty at Horseneck in Greenwich, Connecticut. A little more than 20 miles way, there was a considerable British force encamped at Kingsbridge, Bronx. It has been conducting raids on American points in Connecticut, and the landing at Horseneck was in their sights. On the morning of February 26th, the British raided the landing and quickly drove off the small American contingent. Three weeks later Ephraim was absent from the American muster roll and on March 18th he was reported deserted from "H Neck." On March 21st he enlisted with Emmerich's Chassuers, a unit that was attached to the British Loyal American Regiment, and one of the regiments that had dislodged the Americans from Horseneck. The Chassuers were soon dissolved due to internal politics, and the men were reassigned to other regiments. Ephraim Seeley appears on the April through June Muster Roll of the Guides and Pioneers, another detachment associated with the Loyal American Regiment.
The Guides and Pioneers were raised in New York City in 1776 under the command of Colonel Beverly Robinson. The unit was comparatively small, never at any time more than 150 men. One writer described them as a "set of notorius villains," apparently due to the nature of their service. They were called on to act as guides and scouts, and sometimes spies. "Pioneer" in this sense refers to a soldier who would clear the way for the army. So according to the British themselves, the Guides and Pioneers were quite useful. Sir Henry Clinton, the British Commander in Chief, described the unit:
"A body of [Loyalists] whose Age and information with regard to the Country render their active Services desirable are formed under a Gentleman of most respectable character (Colonel Robinson) into a Corps of Guides and Pioneers. The service of these persons is frequently called for, and is ever cheerfully given: I shall not however disguise to your Lordship that Several Officers are in this Class from whom there is little probability of deriving any advantage. It is often more satisfactory to themselves, and excites less jealousy in others, that they be supposed in real Employment and not receiving a bare Eleemosynary Subsidy." (Source: Great Britain, Public Record Office, Headquarters Papers of the British Army in America, PRO 30/55/2482.)
Ephraim Seeley belonged to the company commanded by Lieutenant (later Captain) Jonathan Williams. While other companies from the regiment participated in the Battle of Rhode Island when the British were under seige, the Southern Campaign taking Charleston, Williams's company remained in New York. Although the Guides and Pioneers were encamped at Bushwick, Brooklyn, but Ephraim was known to have been on duty at Holland's Ferry in Manhattan, Huntington on Long Island, and Paulus Hook in Jersey City. Ephraim did spend a couple of months in Virginia in the summer of 1781. Several of the guides and pioneers were drafted into the force that was conducting raids and taking part in various skirmishes along the Virginia coast, first under General Phillips then under General Cornwallis. When Washington cornered Cornwallis and forced his capitulation, Ephraim may have been one of the nearly 8000 prisoners of war. From the Muster Roll at Bushwick, Ephraim was only said to have been on the "present expedition," and back in camp by the next muster in December.
After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, New York became a rather unpleasant place for the remaining Loyalists. The Corps left New York in September of 1783 with a fleet of other Loyalists regiments and went to New Brunswick. They landed at St John and disbanded there 10 October 1783.
In a 1785 petition to the government regarding land he was occupying at Keswick, Queens County, Ephraim Seeley claimed that he had served five years in the Guides and Pioneers. Captain Jonathan Williams vouched for him in an accompanying letter. Documents pertaining to the Guides and Pioneers have been lost for the earlier years with muster rolls surviving from 1779. Since we known Ephraim signed on with the Chasseurs in early 1779, and continued service with the Guides and Pioneers through late 1783, his time with the army was a bit exaggerated..When they Loyalists fled New York in 1783, Ephraim and his family were probably aboard the Ann which sailed from New York on September 12th and arrived at New Brunswick in the 27th. Captain Jonathan Williams was supposed to be aboard the ship Generous Friends which left in July.
[Williams spent about 10 years in New Brunswick before returning to New York and eventually settling in Ontario.]

It wasn't until March 1779 that Ephraim Seeley ended his stint with the Continental Army and took up with Emerich's Chasseurs. Given that his wife was from New York, and the Chasseurs were stationed there, there's no good reason to believe he was married long before this time. In fact, his wife's family may have been New York Loyalist, which may have played a role in his change of loyalty. It wouldn't be unreasonable to conclude that he was married about this time.
Ephraim Seeley may have had as many as 15 children, most likely born after 1779. According to a petition that he made in July 1785 he had 3 children who died since he settled, and 1 child was born. The next month a return of the settlement was taken, this only showing 1 child. Nine years later he baptized 6 children at th Anglican Church at Gagetown. A petition in January 1797 indicated he had 7 children at the time, another in March records 6.
It is tempting to say that Jerusha was the the one child first born in New Brunswick, but all records giving her age put her birth at much earlier, a range from 1771 to 1778. So let's say Ephraim and Anna were married about 1779 and Jerusha born not too long after. As for the discrepency with the number of children given in the petitions, I imagine it is just that-a discrepency. Jerusha was born before coming to New Brunswick, along with two other children. The other two died after settlement, and another was born. The first child born in New Brunswick was probably Gideon, likely after the August 1785 return.
The next 4 children are known and are the remaining part of the 6 baptized at Gagetown in 1794. Another child was born between then and another petition in 1797, but that child apparently died in 1797. Judging from the census of 1800, two more children were born between 1797 and 1800. Three more children were born between 1800 and 1810.

- Questions to be answered:
1. When and where was Ephraim Seeley married? What was Anna's maiden name and where was she from? They were married some time in the 1770s, just when is unclear. They were most likely married in New York, possibly in Connecticut. Finding a marriage record would certainly reveal Ann's Maiden name, but perhaps the middle names of children Joseph Gidney and Mary Olmstead could point to Anna's family.

Ephraim Seeley and his family lived on Lot 5 Grand Lake several years by 1797, build a house and barn, clear land. He was using parts of Lot 4 to access parts of 5, so he applied to be granted 5, claiming it was vacant, escheated, and the original grantee was gone. John Dunham, the original grantee found out about this, re-applied for the grant to be registered to protect his claim. Ephraim was notified that his application would not be honored. The Petition of Ephraim Seely of Waterborough in Queens County
Humbly Sheweth
That the Petitioner purchased of Duncan McLeod the Original Grantee one half of Lot No 5 situated at the upper Key Hole on the North West side of the Grand Lake upon which he has built a House and Barn and resided for several years and has upon the said half Lot and the other half of the same Lot upwards of ten acres cleared. That John Cook the Grantee of the said last mentioned half of the said Lot No 5 has left the County & having made no improvement thereon the same has been lately escheated.
That John Dunham the Grantee of Lot No 4 adjoining No 5 having made no improvement thereon it has also been escheated. That the whole of the Lot in which the Petitioner lives is so much broken in the front by water as to prevent him from passing to the rear thereof without trespassing upon No 4 upon which there is a ridge of about sixteen rods only that affords a passage to the rear of either Lot.
That the Petitioner has cleared about an acre of No 4, has a large Family of a wife and seven children, and never has had any land granted him by Government in the Country.
The Petitioner therefore humbly prays Your Excellency will be pleased to grant him the remaining half of the said Lot No 5 and also the Lot No 4 adjoining and he will ever pray Etc

Caveat against a grant to ---- Sealy of No 4 Grand Lake
Sealy to be notified hereof
8th July 1797
To His Excellency Thomas Carleton Esquire Lieutenant Governor & Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Province of New Brunswick etc etc etc
The Memorial of John Dunham most humbly
Sheweth
That your Memorialist came to This Province with other Loyalists in the year 1783 and has continued to reside in it from that to the present time.
That in the year 1784 there was granted to him a Lot Number 4 upon the Grand Bay upon which he has been constantly making improvements, and was about to proceed to clear & improve this lot above-mentioned, granted to him & for that purpose leased the same in the month of June now last past to one David Johnston.-That your Memorialist has been since informed that the said Lot was escheated in the month of August last upon the application of one Sealy, by whom as your Memorialist is informed, oath was made, contrary to the fact, that your Memorialist had quitted the Province.
Under all these circumstances Your Memorialist, who can safely appeal to many respectable characters, for his industry, loyalty and exertions in the settlement of the Province, most humbly prays that your Excellency will be pleased to direct that the same lot may be registered to him for a re-grant thereof, as he means forth with to settled & improve the same.
And as in Duty bound will ever pray
John Dunham
S John 6th July 1797
- Lot 7 Digdeguash
Granted: 1817
Disposed: by 1830
Ephraim Seeley occupied the southwestern 10 acres of Lot 7 granted to John Black, located on the Digdeguash River and Cannon's Creek as late as 30 July 1823. That portion seems to have reverted to John Black, because he sold it to George Spurrier 14 January 1824. It is likely that Ephraim Seeley died in that period. Just to the east of the Ephraim Seeley/George Spurrier parcel was another 10 acre parcel that was owned and occupied by Andrew Greer. He sold the lot in 1826 and soon moved to Deer Island. North of the Seeley/Spurrier parcel, and south of Walter Flinn's grant was a parcel of 13 acres, sold to Samuel Dean Junior in 1828.
At some point John Black must have sold the 20 acres of the lot along the road to John McCallum (perhaps he mortgaged it to him), because McCallum conveyed those 20 acres to Samuel Dean Jr in 1829. The remaining 145 acres Black sold to Dean in 1829. It was probably about this time John Black moved to St George to live with his son John. He died there in 1846.
