    • Jack Feeney

The property in red, granted to Thomas Welsh was the location of the John Edward Feeney homestead.? Today it is owned by George MacDonald and before that Jimmy Chessie and my Great Aunt May Essensa Chessie.? I believe the house George lives in contains part of the original building.? You can see it in the picture I sent you of John E Feeney on his birthday in 1889.
      ?
The property next to that, granted to Daniel McKinley, contained the farm of John's brother James.? Today it is owned?through inheritance by my cousin Richard.? When I was growing up in the?forties the old house was still standing?empty and was called?"the old?Pat place"?because the last occupant was James's son Patrick and his wife Rita Sears.? I met one member of that branch of the family in the 1940's.? ?His name was also Patrick and he lived in or near St George NB.? He was my father's age at the time.? I believe Gert met two of his decendence 5 or 6 years ago.
      ?
The McCashion homestead is located on the land granted to Nehemiah Gillman right where the road makes a sharp right.? Most of the farm?is now owned?by Richard?who uses it for hay for his sizable beef herd.? The remainder of that grant?used to be?"owned" by Leo Burgoyne whose family was one of the original Acadian settlers.?
      ?
There is a great story here.? All the people who's name you see on these grants were rewards from the Crown?for either Loyalists, mainly from New Jersey,?or British Soldiers who fought for George 111 in the American War of Independence.? Many of them?never bothered doing the required land clearing to retain ownership?and never settles their grant. So eventually the Grants lapsed.? The thing the British ignored in making these Grants was that there were?already French Acadians who had been living on these lands for a hundred years.
      ?
Such was the case of the Leo Burgoyne family.? When Leo wanted to sell his farm in the 1950's, he found he did not have legal title to it.? He found that my Grandfather owned it.? Granpy, although smart, was not well educated and did not realize the extent of his land holdings which at that time were quite large.? Leo, his good friend, came to him and explained the situation and grandfather signed over the land to him for free so he could sell it.? I always had great respect for my Grandfather for doing this.

Edited by Peter M Toner, New Ireland Press, 1988
?The Irish of New Brunswick at Mid Century: The 1851 Census?
      P M Toner

      p 110
Insofar as can be determined from the evidence, many of the immigrants arrived as families. In fact, two of every three Irish-born married couples listed in the census had arrived in New Brunswick already married, many with children. In addition to these, it is also apparent that in many cases, the husband arrived earlier to seek employment and later sent for his wife and children, and even parents. There are numerous cases where the husband and father had a date of arrival as much as eight years in advance of the rest of the family, which usually arrived later as a group. Sometimes the rest of the family arrived a few at a time. This phenomenon was especially common in the Miramichi, where labour for timber production was imported from Scotland and Ireland for a period of years.

      p 113
The vast majority of the people of Ireland at this time were tenant farmers of landlords' farm labourers. Therefore, it is not surprising that many of the immigrants were farmers here as well. The prospect of owning farmland either through grant or purchase must have been a great incentive for emigration, and the land which had been half cleared by timber operations was part of the lure of New Brunswick. A few Irish immigrants were willing to be tenant farmers here, but most were proprietors.

The majority of those who arrived before 1825 were farmers.
