Recent Deaths
David Johnson
Full of years and of honours a beloved citizen and former mayor of St Stephen in the person of David Johnson entered into rest Monday evening at his home on King street after an illness of eight weeks from the infirmities of age.
Mr Johnson was born at Waweig, this county, in 1840 and practically all of his long life had been spent here in the pursuit of the lumbering industry in which he had by hard labour and careful management accumulated considerable property.
When a young man he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Abigail Glidden of Bog Brook, Me, who predeceased him twelve years. Of this union seven children survive to honour the name of a fondly devoted father. They are Mrs A M Budd, Mrs Mrs Henry Ashley, Willis, Lester, Winslow, and Aubrey F Johnson. Seventeen grand children and twelve great grand children survive, also one brother George Johnson of St Stephen.
In later years he married Mrs John Lawson of St Stephen who also predeceased him.
Mr Johnson was a member of the Masonic and Pythian orders the last survivor of the charter members of Frontier Lodge, K of P.
He was a member of the municipal council for many years while a resident of St Croix parish, and after moving to St Stephen served for several years at the town council, and was elected mayor in 1919, being twice honoured with re-election.
The funeral will be held this afternoon under Masonic auspices.
