  • Notes
    • There were at least 4 Jacob Rowells in Lincoln County in the late 1700s early 1800s. The first was Jacob Rowell, born some time before 1752, was married in Woolwich to Hannah Carleton, in Balltown by 1777. Jacob Rowell m Lucy Vining may be his son, as they appear to have owned land close to one another in Dyer's Pond. This suggestion is brought into doubt by the possibility that Jacob m Lucy may have been born before Jacob m Hannah Carleton was married. Was he a son from a previous marriage? There was a David Rowell assessed in Woolwich in 1770. Was he a brother of Jacob m Hannah Carleton, and Jacob m Lucy a son of his? In 1791 Jacob Rowell's household was assessed for 2 polls. Any sons from his marriage to Hannah Carleton would not have been of age (21+); was the second poll the other Jacob?

Confusing matters is another Jacob Rowell who was also at Balltown. He married Hannah Reeves in 1796, and apparently lived between Dyer's Pond and Clary Pond. Was he the son of Jacob m Hannah Carleton? He stayed in Balltown (later on the Jefferson side), and eventually went to Montville, where 2 other Jacob Rowell resided, and died about 1827.

Jacob m Lucy had gone to Montille before 1800. They family is recorded in the record books for the town (possibly in 1812 or thereabouts), naming his wife as Lucy, thereby quashing the suggestion that Jacob m Lucy and Jacob m Hannah Reeves were the same person.

In 1817 another Jacob Rowell shows up in Montville. He was born about 1795. Where did he come from?
