In 1759 Ball built a house in Alna on his father's old homestead lot. He sold this house four years later but remained in Sheepscot Village until the summer of 1770 when he removed to what is now Whitefield. In Whitefield Samuel settled on what later became the Fowles property on the Hilton Road, probably building where the Cunninghams built the brick house or in that vicinity. Samuel received a grant of this land (190 acres) from the Kennebec Properties in 1777.
