      1786 Notice is hereby given To the Freeholders and Other Inhabitants of Somersworth that a Town Meeting will be held at the Meeting House on Monday 12th Inst at 5 o Clock PM.

      To draw Two persons to Servce on the petit Jury at the next Inferior Court of Common pleas To be holden at Dover on the on the third Tuesday of June next also at the Court of Genl Sessions the Thursday next following said third Tuesday.

      Also to see if the Town will accept of a Road Laid out by Selectmen from Taylors Landing to the Road that leads from the Meeting House to Quampkegan.

      Also to take the Mind of the Town respecting a poor person sent into Town from Berwick, by the name of Paul Grant.

      The town of Somersworth, NH, was set off from Dover and incorporated as a separate town on 23 April 1754. It included at that time the territory of the present towns of Somersworth and Rollinsford, having been set off and incorporated on 3 July 1849. The so-called "Diary" of Master Tate is a record which was kept by an early schoolmaster of Somersworth, who lived in that part of the town which is now Rollinsford. His name first appears in the records of Somersworth on 6 April 1752, while Somersworth was still only a parish, the entry under that date reading: "voted Mr Joseph Tate twenty three Pounds old Tenor to keep ye the Parish School one year." His exact term of service as a teacher is not known, but in his later years he was a town charge, lived with the family of Capt Maurice Hobbs, and on his death was buried on the Hobbs farm. The "Diary" supplies some information about his wife and children.

      In this "Diary" Master Tate entered the family records of the inhabitants of Somersworth from about 1740 to the middle of the Revolutionary War. He gave the names of parents, with the birth records ot their chilren, and also many marriage and death records. He inserted items of local historical interest and various entries of a miscellaneous character, such as anecdotes, verses, humns, etc, which were for the most part copied from almanacs and nespapers of the day.
