p 20
Ebenezer Grover was born 1 May 1724, the son of Mathew Grover and his wife Mary Freethy. Ebenezer was married to Martha Grant of Berwick on 16 August 1745. He came to Whitefield from the Kittery area before 1781 and settled on the hill that rises north of the Hilton Road behind Kenoyers and the Benfords. After selling this homestead farm to Jonathan Jones, Grover moved to what is now Windsor but which at that time went by the name of Pinhook. He built his home on the west side of the West Branch of the Sheepscot and a few yards north of Rte 17.
Grover was very active as a land speculator, both in Whitefield and in Windsor. He sold several tracts of land in Whitefield to which he did not have clear title since he did not recoginze the prior claims of the Kennebec Proprietors. This type of transaction was common practice in Whitefield and other towns within the bounds of the Plymouth patent, and this, of course, added to the friction between the settlers and the Proprietors.
p 88
Ebenezer Grover sold his homestead farm on the hill that rises to the north of the Hilton Road to Jonathan Jones. The sale was made in 1786. That hill is now known as Jones Hill. [The his just to the east of Heath Road and Hilton Road in Whitefield.
- Lot 55 is on the south shore of Pleasant Pond. It extends into Jefferson. There is a good representation of the lot in a map on pade 10a in Ballstown-West.
Ebenezer Grover Sr lived on Jones Hill, south of Pleasant Pond (Now Clary Pond), and just east of the intersection of Heath and Hilton roads in present day Whitefield. Thomas was living on an adjacent lot until about 1786, when he apparently moved to a 200 acre lot in the Pinhook settlement. Ebenezer Jr apparently acquired the lot as an heir to Sr, who died before the 1790 census.
