Enoch Averell was certainly one of the early settlers of Balltown in that part incorporated as Jefferson (the 166th town) 24 February 1807. His farm and home were close to Dyer's Pond and near the place occupied by Samuel Waters.

He died at Balltown the latter part of 1785 or before 1 February 1786 when his widow Ruth (Hilton) Averell, was appointed administratrix of his estate (Lincoln County Probate Records, Wiscasset). Samuel Waters and Benjamin Glidden both of Newcastle were sureties. An inventory was rendered by David Hopkins and Jacob Rowell both of Balltown and Samuel Waters of Newcastle 12 April 1786. Enoch's name does not appear in the "Balltown Town" list of names in the First United States Census 1790 as he had died before that date. And his sons are not mentioned in that census because the eldest was only eighteen years of age, and not head of a household, while the others were about ten or more years younger.

His widow, Mrs Ruth Hilton Averell m 2 Samuel Waters Esq one of the most honored and influential citizens of Jefferson. Both had large families by previous marriages, and they had one child by this marriage. Three of her children, Joseph, Ruth, and William Averell, married chidlren of Samuel Waters.

Balltown was divided into Jefferson, which was incorporated 24 February 1807, and Whitefield, named after Rev Geo Whitefield, which was incorporated 19 June 1809. The ancient records of Balltown are held by the town of Whitefield, from which the compiler obtained certified records of birth and marriages. Jefferson is about 20 miles northeast of Wiscasset, and Whitefield is about 18 miles north-northeast from the same place; both are east of Augusta.

Four of the children of Enoch Averell and Ruth Hilton were born at Pownalborough; the others were born at Balltown before it was divided:

      i. Mary b after 29 January 1767 m - Bamford and removed to the Schoodic Lake region in Maine. They had a family.
      ii. Rachel b abt 1769 m 1 John Weeks m 2 Joseph Chapman
