    • From Carol Sullivan
Louise remembers a story that her father told her about his life in the catholic orphanage. He remembers one day, while he was beating the rugs in the back yard, a truck pulled up. A German farmer got out of the truck and spoke with a nun. Dan over heard him tell the woman that he was looking for a strong, young boy that could help him work his farm in Berlin, CT. Dan immediately and with great fervor, volunteered! The nun was not very happy with him. She did, however, agree to let the farmer take him. He was finally free of the orphanage!

Dan recalled that he once rode a bike from Berlin to Hartford. He wanted to see his father. James worked in a brewery there. The father, James, in his later years, moved to Waterbury to be near his sons. He lived with Dan for a while but left when Alice, Dans wife, was due to deliver their first child, Edward. Edward was born on September 17, 1906.

Louise tells the story of her father learning that his brother Michaels' daughter, Eileen, was very sick. He told Louise that he wanted to see her. They drove to NJ. They didn't know where Eileen lived. They stopped off at the police station for help in finding her. Eileen's telephone # was unlisted. They had to turn around and go back home without Daniel having a chance to say good-bye to his dying niece.

How proud and pleased she sounded when Louise remembered the day that her first baby was born. Dan, her father, told his wife that it wasn't right that his little baby should be so far away (Louise lived in NJ) with her little baby without him. After working all night at the bakery, he took the train to visit her and arrived late at night only to learn that grand fathers were not allowed to visit! He sneaked up the hospital stairs and into his "little girls" room to see her and her little, new born daughter.
    • When Dan got married to Alice (Bridget) Kirwin, then living in Waterbury and working in a bakery, his father moved in with the young couple...He was not a well man. He was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver. Alice (Bridget), now quite pregnant with her first child, was afraid that while her husband worked the graveyard shift, baking for the community, the old man might become seriously ill and die while she was alone. Dan asked his father to leave. I don't know where he moved then. But he died shortly after.
