- From Carol Sullivan
Louise told me that when Daniel was only 6 years old, his mother died. He and his two brothers, James and Michael were put into a home in Deep River, CT. Deep River is about 25 miles south of Hartford. It is close to Waterbury. Their sisters were sent to Springfield, Ma. to live with their Aunt Margaret.
The only source of information I had regarding my paternal grandfather came from my mother, Angie Sullivan Meier. She only met her father-in-law once or twice.
My mother first met him after a date with his son, Michael. Michael brought Angie home to meet his father. He and his sister Eileen lived with him. Their mother, Ruth Allan Sullivan, had recently married Angie's father.
Angie recalls that the father worked in the Little Falls laundry in the NJ town of the same name. He was a truck driver for the laundry. My cousin Beth gave me a copy of a memorial plaque from the Little Falls Salesman's Association. My fathers birth certificate says that the elder was a chaffer.
Within several months of their meeting, Angie and Michael were married (08/28/37). The father, Michael, was in the Paterson General Hospital. (per information obtained from the funeral home). He was dying of cancer. The priest advised the couple to go on with the wedding. They did. They were called back from their honeymoon in New York. Michael (the elder) died on September 2, 1937.
In 2/2000, while working near Little Falls, NJ, the writer stopped at a "Quick Check" store to get a cup of coffee. I asked an older shopper in the store if he knew anything about the Little Falls Laundry that was in the town in the 1930's. He pointed to a large brick building, directly alongside the "Quick Check". He said the laundry had been there for as long as he could remember. It closed in the 1970's. He suggested that I visit with the person in the office of the current business occupying the building to see if they could give me more information. I was not able to take the time to do so. Perhaps on my next visit to the area I will be able to learn more about the laundry.
In letters to Ruth, her mother refers to grandfather Michael Sullivan as "Sull". My cousin Beth recalls our grandmother referring to her ex husband as "Sull". It apparently, was his nickname. A letter from Mary Degraw (Ruth's mother) dated 1927 is addressed to Mrs. Michael S. Sullivan. The elders middle name was Steven.
In 9/2000, there was a response to a message that I left on a message board on the internet. The writer subsequently sent me information about the Little Falls laundry, with pictures. He and his wife, became interested in mine and my cousin Beth's research and agreed to help us. Living in Little Falls, they volunteered to go to the cemeteries to see what they could find. Ates' wife decided that she would check in the local papers of the period to see if she could find the obituary.
In February, the couple sent the following information. Nate went to the funeral directors and learned that Michael (the elder) died on September 2, 1937 in Paterson General Hospital. He is buried in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Section C, lot #667. He was buried on September 4, 1937. In 11/2001, I spoke with my grandfather Michaels niece, Louise Dunn. Louise is the only surviving daughter of Daniel, the twin. Louise told me that when Michael died Dan, his wife, Alice, their daughter Irene and her husband all traveled to NJ to attend his funeral. It was comforting for me to know that my grandfathers family was with him.
When I asked Louise why no one seemed to know much about my grandfather, she said that she thought that his wife, Ruth, caused a riff in the family.
