      Mrs Arthur H Shaw

      Mrs Bertha L (Sullivan) Shaw 72 of 76 Amherst St. died Monday in Mercy Hospital. She was born in Hartford, Jan 30, 1891, daughter of the late James and Bridget Moriarty Sullivan, and had lived in this city for 60 years. Mrs Shaw spent summers in East Lee. She was a member of St Michael's Cathedral and St Mary's Church, Lee. Her husband Arthur H Shaw who died in 1956 had been head projectionist at the Paramount Theater. She leave a daughter Mrs Audrey L White of this city; a brother Daniel J Sullivan of Waterbury, Conn; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at T P Sampson funeral home Thursday at 8 am with a solemn high mass of requiem in St Michael's Cathedral at 9. The burial will be in St Michael's Cemetery. Visiting hours today and Wednesday at 2 to 4 and 7 to 10 pm.

      Received your letter certainly was glad to learn you were all right. Had worried awful about you. Did not know even if you had got back to ? Or not. So you see your letter took a load off my shoulders. So happy to know you and Baby are fine. Sure would love to see her. Bet she is cute. Picture was sweet. Dandy sure had got big. Audrey children are all fine and getting so big. Douglas is taller than Dan.

      Had quite a summer. Went up country early to get set for the season, which is expected a busy one. Well? The 28th of May they rushed me to the Hospital in Pitts? For a stone in the Gall bladder. Operated the 2 of June. And was there a month with day and night nurses

      Aunt Mamie and her family are all fine. Also Audrey and her family. Children are getting very big. Well Darling enough for ?. This is the first day I have tome to write. But one everyone I know a letter. So am typing to get caught up. Mrs Crane has been lovely to me was up country twice to see me while I was sick. Now she is in Phil. Her daughter was rushed to the Hospital last week. So Jonnie is staying there to be near her. First me them Glad. Poor Johnnie is a nervous wreck. Sure hope we all came through alright. Give my love to Bill and the children. Don't overdo dear take it easy. Let me hear from you soon and tell me how you are.

      one week to the day he died his mother Aunt Delia died of a broken heart. You know James was always her standby. Since his father and Rita died he was the head of the house. 4 deaths in one family in 2 years is awful. Dan has moved in the house and keepin a place for Mary and Arthur that is all that is left home now. They have a house keeper and our doing very good. Poor kids sure went through an awful lot in one week. James was sick a week with a cold. But guess he was pretty well run down. Aunt Delia had been sick and he had his hands full trying to take care of her. Got her well then he went so soon and then her. It sure knocked us all to pieces.

      Dear Aunt Bertha

      I received your letter this week, and I was very happy to hear from you. So glad that Uncle Arthur is well enough to go back to work.

      Well things are going along about the same down here. Beth is very much letter, and I am able to take a deep breath and relax a little.

      Of coarse we are not too happy about the planes that continue to fly low over the house. We are hoping that steps will be taken to move the Airport. You probably know about the terrible accident last week when the place crashed into those homes. That was only three miles from our house coming into the runway. We are about a mile from the part?. I've been holding my breath every time one fly's over the house.

      We are having some cold weather down here, I guess it is much colder up there.

      We are still looking for a place to live, so far unsuccessfully. We just missed a lovely place last week, seven rooms and sun porch. Well, we shall keep trying.

      I've got to get some new furniture too. Our stuff is ready to fall apart soon.

      Well honey, I guess that is about all. Diane is setting collecting stamps as I write this, “God knows how you di it,” but she is doing is. She sends her love to you and Uncle Arthur “As do I.”

      Dear Eileen

      What in sun is the matter with you. Have not heard a word from you since before Christmas. Are you sick or what is the trouble. I know you don't have much time, if you are working. But does seem as if you could let me know how you are. And where Bill is! I just got back from being down South with Audrey. Vic was sent to Camp Lejeune from the coast. So Audrey did not stay at the coast as long as she would had liked too. Got work from her Douglas was in the Hospital very sick. So packed my bag was on my way. Found him a very sick boy. But when I left he had come home and was on the gain. We said he is growing to fast for his age. He is as tall as Dan only 9 years old. Brought Judith home with me. So would ...Doug. He is a lovely boy and of course Michael is just grand. Audrey has lost a lot of weight. But she did when she was there two years ago. Wish she would pack up and come home. I don't think the climate agrees with her or the children. She has a very nice cottage house all to herself lovely place. But I still wish she was ? me.

      How is Dandy & yourself. Take time out and write to me, also if I am not asking to give away your secrets, would you mind telling me bye any chance. Did you received the package I sent you Xmas! Of course my dear if it is a secret. Don't tell me. Are you getting called down? Yes.

      Aunt Bertha lived in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was married to Arthur H Shaw. Arthur was an electrician. The couple had a dauughter named Audrey. Audrey married Victor White. The couple has a son. His name was Douglas. Beth recalls that someone in this family ran for the Senate in about 1960. She believes it may have been this son. Audrey also had a daughter named Judy and another son Michael. I believe she had four children in all. Bertha's death certificate states that Audrey lived with Aunt Bertha at the time of Bertha's death. Bertha was a widow.

      Bertha visited New Jersey often. She had a strong affection for her niece, my Aunt Eileen. My Uncle Bill reports that Arthur and Aunt Bertha were wonderful people. He was very fond of Aunt Bertha. Beth recalls that Aunt Bertha had a striking presence. She had a very thick head of hair, a round face and eyes that were droopy. She remembers that she had a fur coat.

      Aunt Bertha and Uncle Arthur lived in a very large, important looking house. They had many antiques. During her visits to Aunt Bertha's house, she made gifts of her treasures to my aunt Eileen. Beth recalls that she gave her mother a number of oil paintings. She remembers too that she gave her a pair of shoes, antique shoes. They were prcelain figures of shoes. She still has them.

      Aunt Bertha died in 1963. She suffered with stomach cancer. Beth Pulice remembers her mother Eileen Sullivan Shraeder grieving over the loss of Aunt Bertha. She recalls that Eileen directed the florist to send a single road to the funeral porlor each day that Bertha's body laid in state. The rose was placed on the coffim. Aunt Bertha, like Aunt Eileen, loved roses.

      When asked about the where abouts of the paintings, Beth remembered that, as a young girl coming home from school, she would notice one missing. Her mother comforted her by telling her not to be concerned, she had given it to the Doctor for payment for the home visit. Eileen had leukemia. She was always very sickly. She was bed ridden for many years before her death.

      In a conversation with Bertha's godson Arthur Sullivan in October 2001, Arthur told me that Aunt Bertha had an antique store in East Lee, Massachusetts. She also ran a theater in York, Maine. Uncle Arthur managed a theatre. I will ask Arthur more questions about this when I speak with him again.

Samuel Johnson and Lydia Remick of Balltown were married in Pownalborough and settled in the frontier plantation of Balltown shortly before the Revolution. Samuel John was a Continental soldier, serving nearly 2 years. His parents of Thomas Johnson and Esther Tuttle, two early settlers of the Barrington 42 40-acre lots, having come from Greenland, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Lydia Remick was born in York, Maine, daughter of Jacob Remick and Mary Grover (daughter of Matthew Grover and Hannah Freethy). Lydia's widowed mother Mary was first the widow of Benjamin Elwell. We know that Mary and Lydia were living in Madbury, New Hampshire, (adjacent to Barrington) in the 1760s. There is a possibility that Lydia Remick and Samuel Johnson knew each other before moving to mid-coast Maine in the early 1770s, Lydia to Pownalborough (where her brother Joseph Remick m Sarah Remick, who had children William Remick m Elizabeth Austin and Joseph Remick m Priscilla Noble) and Samuel to Newcastle. Samuel Johnson's siblings included Esther Johnson m Elijah Tuttle, Thomas Johnson m Abigail Berry, James Johnson, Charity Johnson m Solomon Hall, Andrew Johnson m Elizabeth Buzzell m Catherine Jackson, Lydia Johnson m Emmanuel Grace, and David Johnson m Martha Carpenter. Samuel Johnson of Charlotte County had children George Johnson m Lydia Ann Brisley, William Johnson m Annabella Simpson, Leonard Johnson m Jane Higgins, Benjamin Johnson m Elizabeth Ann Brisley, and Sarah Jane Johnson m William McClelland (McLelland). The Simpsons had several relatives both in Charlotte County, New Brunswick (St Andrews parish, St Croix parish, Dumbarton parish, Saint Patrick parish), and afield. Henry Simpson from Armagh, Ireland, was a brother of James Johnson. Henry's wife was named Mary; they had children James Simpson m Isabella Mitchell, Henry Simpson m Ellen Shea, Jacob Simpson m Clarissa Herald m Jane McCarrick, John E Simpson m Eleanor Jane Orr, Nicolina Simpson m James Guest, Abraham Simpson m Charlotte Kirby, Mary Ann Simpson m William Towle, and Samuel Simpson m Mary Carroll. Leslie Simpson was another brother of James and Henry. He had children Jane Simpson m Isaac Bard who lived in Boonville, Oneida, New York and Cheyenne, Laramie, Wyoming; Leslie Simpson m Catherine Levar who lived in St David parish; Elizabeth Simpson m John Creighton who lived in Haldimand and Cobourg, Northumberland West, Ontario; Isabella Simpson m Thomas Black who lived in St David parish; and Margaret Simpson m Francis A Dinsmore who lived in St David. William, another brother, married Sybil Eastman and later Sarah McCann. His children were Joseph Andrew Simpson m Elizabeth Mary Johnson, Margaret Louise Simpson m William Henry Simpson. The Greenlaws were a very large family of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, and Deer Isle, Maine. Just after the Revolution, there were more than 3 dozen Greenlaws in Charlotte County, and the number kept growing. I have conducted extensive research on the Greenlaws. My closest Sullivans were James Sullivan who married Bridget Moriarty in Hartford Connecticut. James Sullivan was the son of Daniel Sullivan m Mary Shea who lived at Bunglasha, Corrawoolia, Lickeen, and Reennanallagane [Reenanalagane], Glenbeigh. Daniel was the sonf of Timothy Sullivan m Mary Coffey, of Drombrane, Bunglasha, and Corrawoolia, Lickeen. He was said to be from Dromod. There are countless other Sullivans associated with these families, both in Glenbeigh, Killorglin, Knockane as well as Hartford, Connecticut, and the many other places of settlement in Connecticut and Massachusetts. These Sullivans were known by the moniker Fiely. Bridget Moriarty was the daughter of James Moriarty m Mary Cronin of Boheeshil, Knockane, and Glannagilliagh, Killorglin. Their other children were Ellen Moriarty m John J Sullivan [brother of James Sullivan], Mary J Moriarty m Thomas Kennedy, Julia E Moriarty m John J Fitzpatrick, and Margaret Elizabeth Moriarty m Michael J Leahy m James Francis Farrell. James Moriarty was the son of Martin Moriarty m Honora Sullivan who lived at Glannagilliagh and Muingaphuca, Killorglin. Their other children included Ellen Moriarty m Michael Brennan, and Mary Moriarty m Eugene Grady. These Moriartys were known by the moniker Buony. James Sullivan m Bridget Moriarty had a son named James Joseph Sullivan who married Bridget Downey. Bridget Downey was born Bridget Doona who was the daughter Michael Doona and Ellen Griffin of Dromglass, Coolroe, Glenbeigh. I am also a descendant of Frank Romanski and Dominica Brodowski of Norwich, Connecticut. Frank was from Piatkowizna, Turosl, Kolno, Poland. Dominica was from Nowa Wies, Bakalarzewa, Suwalki, Podlaskie, Poland. I have collected extensive amounts of information regarding these families, both in Poland and Connecticut and Massachusetts.
