      p 81
Lt Charles Glidden (Charles, Capt Richard, Charles) was born in Exeter about 1725; died in Rowley, Mass 25 April 1776. (Vital Records Rowley.) He married Weathern, (Wetheren) daughter of Michael Weathern of Greenland and a sister to Arnold Weather. With three sisters and a brother "Arnel Wozen," she was baptized at Greenland in 1729 as Abigail "Wozen," daughter of Michael "Wozen." (New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 29:30.) She died in Palermo, Me, shortly before 1 Dec 1817 a widow.

Charles Glidden resided in Stratham in 1742, in Exeter in 1749.

He petitioned from Strathan as "a Cape Briton man," 26 October 1748 (NH Provincial Paper, 28: 300) which shows that he was a soldier at Louisburg in 1745.
The descendants of Charles Glidden of Portsmouth and Exeter, New Hampshire

He also appears as Lieutenant in Capt William Miller's Train Band on the east Side of the Damariscotta river and was stationed at Pemaquid [Bristol], Me, 6 April 1757. This service was in the French and Indian War on the coast of Maine. (Mass Archives, 95: 254.)

Charles Glidden purchased a farm at the head of Damariscotta Salt River in 1752. He lived at a place called Walpole [Bristol] which was without the bounds of any town in 1768. In that year he sold his farm at the head of the Damariscotta Salt River on the east side of the Bay to his son Benjamin Glidden.

On 1 March 1768 he purchased 100 acres on the east side of the Sheepscott River. From 1768 to 1775, he lived on the Sheepscott River and was aparently one of the proprietors of Ballstown.

It must be remembered that the town of Damariscotta was not incorporated until 1847 and that it was included within Nobleboro until that year; and that the town of Nobleboro was incorporated in 1788 thirteen years after the death of Charles Glidden. At the time of Charles Glidden's residence there, 1752 to 1768, it was an unorganized settlement called Walpole. He then removed to the Sheepscott valley and there resided from 1768 to 1776.

The town records of Rowley call him "Capt Charles Glidden of Sheepscott, Me" in reporting his death there. [1]

Charles Glidden came to this country as early as 1656, and settled in Portsmouth, NH. He afterwards moved to Exeter, where in 1672 he took the oath of allegiance and died there leaving a large family. He is the first of whom we have any record in New Hampshire, coming thither probably under Mason, who was Governor of Portsmouth in Hampshire, England. In this County lies the town of Glidden.

From him descended Joseph, Tobias and Zebulon, all of whom were born in Lee, NH. Joseph, the eldest brother came to Newcastle from Durham, NH, about the year 1750. His first purchase of land of which we find any record was the 192 acres of the Wm Vaughan estate, as per deed executed at Portsmouth, NH, 1758. See map. To the above he added other purchases of land, two from Benjamin Jones, one from John Hussey and one from Joseph Taylor, all of which bounded westerly on the county road, thus obtaining for himself an outlet which for years be could not have had. In his purchase of Vaghan's Executor, he was restricted as follows: "That the said Joseph Glidden is to build a house and to live in the same within six months from this date, and improve by plopughing four acres of said land, in order that the coutnry be settled and improved."

His purchase of the Taylor homestead was made in 1774. How soon after this he occupied this place is uncertain; but it was probably in 1781, as Joseph 2nd was married in that year and all of his children were born in the old homestead which his father vacated for his use. In this place he resided until his death which occurred in 1817.
