Notes |
- Tracing the parents of Temperance Hall m Levi Haskins is not a straightforward endeavor. Her death records gives their names as William Hall born in Plymouth, and Temperance born in Marion (formerly part of Rochester). Levi Haskins's brother John married Orpha Hall, who is supposed to be a sister of Temperance. Another presumed sister is Ruby Hall m Levi Maxim m Edmund Sears. Ruby's death in 1870 was recorded twice, each record giving different names of parents: one naming her father as William, the other calling her parents John and Temperance. These three records do not make it clear who these women's parents were. But we don't expect perfect accuracy from death records since the informants likely never knew the decedant's parents, and even if they did, the information would likely degrade over the several decades since their births.
Temperance was living in Plymouth when she was married in 1818. We look to the censuses before and after to identify Hall families living there. In 1810, there was only 1 Hall household in Plymouth, a black family headed by Priscilla Hall. In 1820, there were 2 Hall households: Eber Hall and John Hall. John was the son of Luke Hall. Eber had been living in Plymouth as early as 1806, when he appeared in front of the Probate judge to choose his guardian, as his father William had died. We find William Hall's household in the 1800 census in Plymouth. Since he cannot be identified in the 1810 census, we can conclude that the William Hall, father of Eber, who died in late 1805 or early 1806 was the 1800 householder. Two other children of William Hall could be Cynthia Hall m Joseph Maxim and William Hall b c 1803. These proposed children, as well as Eber, Temperance, Orpha and Ruby, coincide with the individuals in William's household in that census.
Another William Hall in the same generation as the William Hall counted in the 1800 census can be ruled out as the father of Temperance Hall. William Hall s Adam Hall m Keziah Ford was born in Marshfield in 1771. There is no record that he was married or had any children. When his father signed his will in 1806 he mentioned "one watch which was my son Williams," which implies that William was dead. The 1809 will of Adam's widow Keziah has similar language pertaining to William. Keziah's will also mentions a granddaughter, child of Samuel Hall deceased. This suggests further that William was not only dead, but had no children. William Hall of Marshfield was not the father of Temperance.
It may be that Temperance's family had originally come from Rochester. After she and Levi were married, they remained in Plymouth for a few more years before moving to Rochester. Her death certificate said her mother was from Rochester, and family may have drawn her back there. Eber is also said to have been born in Rochester. The suggestion that Temperance's family came from Rochester prompts more questions about her father and ancestors. Can William Hall's origins be found in Rochester? Had other Plymouth Halls come from Rochester? The answer to both questions is "Yes!"
In 1785, Luke Hall married Elizabeth Burgess in Rochester, but had moved to Plymouth by 1792. Rhoda Hall married Benjamin Westgate in Rochester in 1786, and had also moved to Plymouth in the early 1790s. Luke and Rhoda were children of William Hall m Elizabeth Chilson, and they were born some time in the 1760s. Their brother William was born in the same period. He sold land he owned with his brother Luke. He married in Rochester, and moved along with his siblings to Plymouth.
Occam's Razor dictates that the William Hall who married in Rochester, and moved to Plymouth with his siblings in the 1790s, is the same who was counted in the 1800 census in Plymouth, and died there in 1805 or 1806. Unfortunately, as straight as the line seems, the path isn't clear. The veracity of the hypothesis is complicated by the fact that the marriage record from 1789 in Rochester was between William Hall and Content Landers. Is Content Landers Hall the "Temperance" Hall mother of Temperance and Ruby? Since we have no records of "Temperance" during her lifetime, we don't know if that indeed was her name. So the name Content may have been lost to history in the family, and the name Temperance to take the place.
