I remember Joe Romanski at the Norwich YMCA in the late 40's when I worked there while going to school. He taught me to pitch softball. I never forgot him and two other guys that used to come in and practice. He was a great pitcher and a great guy.

Norwich honoring Romanski
Little League advocate's son to throw first pitch
By JOE PEREZ
Norwich Bulletin
http://www.norwichbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006604290327&template=printart
Today marks the opening of the Norwich Little League season at Dodd Stadium. But for the first time in more than a half century, Joe Romanski will not be part of the season. But his memory will be front and center.
Romanski, a long-time Norwich Little League advocate, passed away last Christmas Eve.
"This was one of his favorite days," said his son, Paul Romanski, who will throw out the first pitch this morning. "He used to drive around Norwich to make sure kids had bats and gloves to play."
Romanski's widow, Marilyn, recalled how her husband would often be away from home because of Little League. "He liked the kids," she said.
Most of the community knew Joe as a coach. But Joe, the baseball coach, only began to scratch the surface of Joe, the husband and father.
In the four-plus months since his passing, the family is still trying to get used to their foundation not being there.
"You are used to him being in his chair and he's not there," Paul said.
"It's a lot of work for me," Marilyn said. "I just sold the car, I'm taking care of the bills. It's a lot of work mixed with sadness because we used to do those things together."
Today's opening isn't so much a farewell to the life of Joe Romanski. Instead it's a tribute to the life of a man who tirelessly devoted himself to Norwich and the game of baseball.
As part of the Little League's salute to Romanski, the league had asked Marilyn to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, but she declined. Instead, at his mother's request, Paul will do the honor.
"It's very exciting," Paul Romanski said. "I'm going to be choked up."
Marilyn hasn't attended many games since her sons moved on from the league. But she will be on hand today.
"It's so hard for me to say," she said of her emotions." Sorrow more than anything else because [Joe's] not going to be here."
Joe Romanski believed in getting children involved in playing baseball. A big reason, according to Paul, is that baseball was such a vital aspect of his father's childhood and he wanted others to have the opportunity to play.
One of those children was Chicago White Sox slugger Paul Konerko.
"He was so proud of [Konerko]," said Marilyn. "It would be so perfect to see Paul again."
So today, when children are scrambling around the bases, know that somewhere, Joe Romanski is smiling.
"This is what he loved," Marilyn added.
