    • The Tithes Applotment Books were compiled beginning in 1823, about the time that the Hewitts left Ireland. The name Hewitt is recorded 59 times in Down, 4 times in Antrim and 66 times in Armagh. Since James Hewitt was known to be from Down and Jane O'Neill Hewitt his wife is said to have been from Antrim, it is likely that they were from border parishes. Moira and Shankill, in Down, and Aghalee, Antrim, are such border parishes where Hewitts were landholders in the Tithes Books. The Hewitts are not found in the Shankill. Aghalee records do not begin until 1811. Moira records have gaps from 1756 to 1823. Considering that the only other Adam Hewitts were from Moira, or connected to Moira, our Hewitts were probably from Moira.

      Perhaps the Adam Hewitt who died in Moira about 1808 is a son of this Adam, and James and Robert his sons.

    • Our Hewitts were most likely from Moira. Hewitts were highly concentrated there at the time of Tithes. Records for surrounding parishes were searched for our Hewitts. The probable marriage record of Robert Hewitt was found in a parish near Belfast, otherwise void of Hewitts. The name Adam Hewitt emanates from Moira, with
      1. a freeholder in Moira with that name in 1766
      2. the baptism of Margaret daughter of Adam Hewitt in 1785
      3. the marriage record of Adam Hewitt and Mary McDonald in 1786.
      4. an Adam Hewitt born in Dumnavaddy, Moira, baptized at Seapatrick
      The Moira Church of Ireland records do not survive for the crucial periods that we would find record of our Hewitts there:
      1. The marriage record of Adam Hewitt in the 1790s
      2. The baptism records of Robert and James in the 1790s or the 1800s.
      Our Hewitts left Ireland before the times of Tithes.
      A Y-chromosome Hewitt match to our line of Hewitts is also from Moira.
      It seems our Hewitts fit right into the Moira gaps. Still looking for evidence.

      Adam HEWITT was born about 1744, according to the one source that I have. Considering the source was a census taken in 1851, and his age was given as 107, I find the years 1744 suspect. Adam came to New Brunswick in 1820.

      James HEWITT, whose father (or perhaps grandfather?) was Adam, was born about 1804. He came to New Brunswick in 1818, but may have come later since he was said to have traveled with his brother Robert who arrived in 1823.

      Robert HEWITT, brother of James, was born c 1797. He was married in Ireland before coming to New Brunswick around 1818. His wife's name was Ann. I have a certain amount of confidence that the Robert Hewitt who married Ann McGowan in Glenavy, Antrim, in 1822 is the same Robert Hewitt, not least of all since there are no baptismal record of children of that couple found in Ireland. Other ways that consistency between this Robert and our Robert include: 1. Robert did not appear in the Tithes or Griffith's Valuation; 2. Both Robert and Ann in the marriage record were said to be residing in Tullyrusk. There were no Hewitts or McGowans there at Tithes or Griffith's Valuation; 3. Tullyrusk is adjacent to Glenavy and Belfast (see below).
      In petitions to the Crown, both Robert and James gave their birthplace as Down, Ireland.

      At the time of the Tithes survey, Hewitts in Down were concentrated in the parishes of Moira (42), Killinchy (7) and Shankill (4). Moira parish straddles Armagh, Down and Antrim. Shankill straddles Armagh and Down and is adjacent to Moira. Killinchy parish is several miles east of these. None were in Tullyrusk or Glenavy, where I believe Robert Hewitt was married.

      Church of Ireland records exist for Moira, and the registers have been extracted and indexed at the FHL for the years 1784-1860. Our Hewitts are not found in those records. There are gaps, during which most of the Hewitt events would have fallen.

      Church of Ireland records exist for Shankill (Civil Parish). These records were searched by FamilyUlster March 2015. Our Hewitts are not found in those records.

      Church of Ireland records exist for Killinchy. Baptism and marriages exist for only and have been indexed for the years 1812-1854, which would have recorded the marriage of Robert Hewitt, if he were married there.

      The town of Belfast is remembered in family, but no trace of the family has been found there.

This is my database of people I have researched during the course of compiling my own genealogy and family history. My primary interests include the following. Families from Charlotte County New Brunswick -William Johnson and Annabella Simpson -Robert Carroll and Sarah Ann Greer -William McCrum and Jane Hall -James Hewitt and Nancy Montgomery -Samuel Johnson and Sarah Greenlaw -James Simpson and Ann Gray -Andrew Greer and wife [] Seeley and second wife Matilda Pendleton Leeman -James Hewitt and James O'Neill, including his apparent father Adam Hewitt -William Montgomery and Mary Ann Creighton The Johnson family has roots in Whitefield (Balltown), Maine, and Barrington, New Hampshire. Samuel Johnson and Lydia Remick of Balltown were married in Pownalborough and settled in the frontier plantation of Balltown shortly before the Revolution. Samuel John was a Continental soldier, serving nearly 2 years. His parents of Thomas Johnson and Esther Tuttle, two early settlers of the Barrington 42 40-acre lots, having come from Greenland, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Lydia Remick was born in York, Maine, daughter of Jacob Remick and Mary Grover (daughter of Matthew Grover and Hannah Freethy). Lydia's widowed mother Mary was first the widow of Benjamin Elwell. We know that Mary and Lydia were living in Madbury, New Hampshire, (adjacent to Barrington) in the 1760s. There is a possibility that Lydia Remick and Samuel Johnson knew each other before moving to mid-coast Maine in the early 1770s, Lydia to Pownalborough (where her brother Joseph Remick m Sarah Remick, who had children William Remick m Elizabeth Austin and Joseph Remick m Priscilla Noble) and Samuel to Newcastle. Samuel Johnson's siblings included Esther Johnson m Elijah Tuttle, Thomas Johnson m Abigail Berry, James Johnson, Charity Johnson m Solomon Hall, Andrew Johnson m Elizabeth Buzzell m Catherine Jackson, Lydia Johnson m Emmanuel Grace, and David Johnson m Martha Carpenter. Samuel Johnson of Charlotte County had children George Johnson m Lydia Ann Brisley, William Johnson m Annabella Simpson, Leonard Johnson m Jane Higgins, Benjamin Johnson m Elizabeth Ann Brisley, and Sarah Jane Johnson m William McClelland (McLelland). The Simpsons had several relatives both in Charlotte County, New Brunswick (St Andrews parish, St Croix parish, Dumbarton parish, Saint Patrick parish), and afield. Henry Simpson from Armagh, Ireland, was a brother of James Johnson. Henry's wife was named Mary; they had children James Simpson m Isabella Mitchell, Henry Simpson m Ellen Shea, Jacob Simpson m Clarissa Herald m Jane McCarrick, John E Simpson m Eleanor Jane Orr, Nicolina Simpson m James Guest, Abraham Simpson m Charlotte Kirby, Mary Ann Simpson m William Towle, and Samuel Simpson m Mary Carroll. Leslie Simpson was another brother of James and Henry. He had children Jane Simpson m Isaac Bard who lived in Boonville, Oneida, New York and Cheyenne, Laramie, Wyoming; Leslie Simpson m Catherine Levar who lived in St David parish; Elizabeth Simpson m John Creighton who lived in Haldimand and Cobourg, Northumberland West, Ontario; Isabella Simpson m Thomas Black who lived in St David parish; and Margaret Simpson m Francis A Dinsmore who lived in St David. William, another brother, married Sybil Eastman and later Sarah McCann. His children were Joseph Andrew Simpson m Elizabeth Mary Johnson, Margaret Louise Simpson m William Henry Simpson. The Greenlaws were a very large family of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, and Deer Isle, Maine. Just after the Revolution, there were more than 3 dozen Greenlaws in Charlotte County, and the number kept growing. I have conducted extensive research on the Greenlaws. James Sullivan was the son of Daniel Sullivan m Mary Shea who lived at Bunglasha, Corrawoolia, Lickeen, and Reennanallagane [Reenanalagane], Glenbeigh. Daniel was the sonf of Timothy Sullivan m Mary Coffey, of Drombrane, Bunglasha, and Corrawoolia, Lickeen. He was said to be from Dromod. Their other children included Ellen Moriarty m Michael Brennan, and Mary Moriarty m Eugene Grady. These Moriartys were known by the moniker Buony. James Sullivan m Bridget Moriarty had a son named James Joseph Sullivan who married Bridget Downey. Bridget Downey was born Bridget Doona who was the daughter Michael Doona and Ellen Griffin of Dromglass, Coolroe, Glenbeigh. I am also a descendant of Frank Romanski and Dominica Brodowski of Norwich, Connecticut. Frank was from Piatkowizna, Turosl, Kolno, Poland.
