William G McClelland
The sudden death of Wm G McClelland last Thursday afternoon has cast a gloom over our whole neighborhood. The facts of the cases, as far as learned are as follows: He had been fitting up a horse to use in sawing wood, was oiling the gearing while the machine was in motion when the fly-wheel burst and a piece of iron hit him in the head, passing through the brains to the opposite side it entered, causing instant death. He will be sadly missed not only by his immediate relatives but all who knew him. The funeral services were held at the house Sunday Jan 17th where numerous friends took a parting look of their friend and neighbor. Rev W Fisk conducted the funeral services and his remains were laid in the Freeborn Cemetery, followed by a large train of relatives and friends. He served his country faitfully in the late war, was an honored member if the Ash Post No 98 GAR and many of his comrades followed him to his last resting place. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the mourning relatives of the deceased in this their time of sorrow. Albert McClelland, brother of the deceased arrived from Clark, SD Tuesday before his brother was killed.

MD [Name of Physician or Surgeon] a resident of Albert Lea of the County of Freeborn State of Minnesota who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: I have been acquainted with the above named William G McClelland for the last 28 years. Original Pension Claim No 713 509 Wm G McClelland, Rank, Pt, Company A 16th Regiment Wisconsin, Austin, Minn, State, Hartland, Minn
5th March 1890
We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law we have carefully examined this applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following disability, incurred in the service, viz:
Chronic diarrhea, resulting dyspepsia, rheumatism, heart disease, and liver complaint, result of ague.
Pulse rate per minute 82; respiration 18; temperature 99; height 5'11?, weight 155 pounds, age 44 years.
He makes the following statement upon which he bases his claim for original says that he suffers from constipation alternating with attacks of diarrhea, from indigestion, flatulence and emanations from pain and stiffness of various joints and muscles and from shortness of breath on exertion.
Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: The appearance of this applicant is that of impaired health, skin pale, and general ????tion poor. The tongue is ????, abdomen tympanitic and complains of tenderness. The line projects slightly beyond the border of the ribs. The spleen apparently normal. The veins of the rectum varicose forming from tumors of medium size, the largest 3/4 inch in diameter. The heart's impulse is forcible and distinct, ? Beat about the 6? intes? space and ? outward, cardiac dullness ? downward and outward, ? ? dull and prolonged. Walks lame at the present time from a late attack of ? of the left side and the muscles of this thight are slightly wasted perhaps as a results of frequent attacks of the same complaint as alleged.
From the existing condition and the history of this complaint, as stated by himself, it is, in our judgment, probably that the disability was incurred in the service as he claims, and that it has been prolonged or aggravated by vicious habits. He is, in our opinion, entitle to a 8/18 rating for the disability caused by ch diarrhea resulting dyspepsia for that caused by and 8/18 for rheumatism caused by heart disease and 2/18 for the hypertrophy of him results of ague.
