McClelland--At his home in Hartland April 28, 1892, of old age, Wm. J. McClelland, in his 83rd year.
Deceased was born in Scotland September 16, 1809; came to America when he was 20 years old; was married in 1833; removed to Wisconsin 1851, and from there he came to Freeborn County September 25, 1862, and settled on the farm where he and his wife, who survives him, have since made their home and from whence he quietly departed this life on Thursday last just at sunset. He was formerly a member of the Presbyterian church but when the Congregational Church was organized at Hartland about 1873, he became a worthy member, and was chosen Deacon, which office he held till his death. He was a loving husband and father, a kind neighbor and an honorable and highly esteemed citizen, greatly beloved and respected by all who knew him. He reared a large family of children, eight whom survive him. Owing to the heavy rains last Sunday the funeral sermon will be preached at the Congregational church in Freeborn May 15, 1892.

      17 November 1886
Mr Wm J McClelland returned from Clark and Coddington county, Dakota last week where he has been visiting his children and grandchildren. He reports very hard times in that part of the territory; about half a crop of wheat and less than half a crop of oats is the general report. Wheat is worth fifty cents per bushel and oats the same, and money very hard to get.

      5 January 1887
Wm J McClelland has recently been sick but is considerable better this week. Mr McClelland is one of our early settlers, is about 80 years of age, still we hope he remains with us many years, for he is a kind and obliging neighbor respected by all who know him.

      27 April 1887
Wm J McClelland started for Clark and Coddington counties, Dakota on a visiting tour and expects to be absent about two weeks.

      30 May 1888
William Jenkins from Hayward with his family visited at McClelland's home a part of last week. Those who are afflicted with the Washington Territory fever are respectfully referred to him for information. What he tells you is reliable, and I do not doubt that hundreds would return if they had money to pay their fare to their former homes.

      27 June 1888
Alfred McClelland, wife and family are down from Clark county, Dakota, visiting relatives and friends. Mr McClelland says crops in Clark county are much better than any he has seen in Freeborn county. They have had no more rain than the crops needed to insure a good healthy growth.

      2 May 1889
Mr and Mrs Wm J McClelland and their daughter Mrs Freedom Beede, expect to start for Dakota some time this week. They go to visit relatives, and Mrs Beede, whose health is poor, contemplates remaining until fall.
