    • That burial record of Sarah Ann Crory was in the later book-Anglican-when the Elmsville church became part of the St David, St Patrick, and St James circuit. We are hoping to be allowed to photocopy that book before it goes to Fredericton archives with the old books. It is a recent book. I think Sarah Ann was interred in the early 1900's.

History of the Episcopal Church in Washington County, Maine
      bmartin episcopalmaine.org
      Hello Ms Martin,
I found you email address on the Diocese of Maine website and I hope you might be able to answer a question for me.

I suspect that my ancestor was married in the Eastport/Calais area of Maine around 1820, but the record of his marriage does not appear in the civil records in any of the nearby towns (or New Brunswick). I understand that no Episcopal churches were established in the area until much later. I have read, however, that itinerant Episcopal ministers would visit these far flung reaches of Maine and performed marriages and baptized children. My hope is that the papers of one of these ministers might reveal the marriage record (or even a mention of the baptisms of his children) of my ancestor. I cannot begin a search, though, for I don't know who might have been those ministers, or where I might find their papers.

Do you know who the ministers who traveled to the Eastport/Calais region in the 1810s and 1820s were? Do their papers or record of their ministry exist still? Is access granted to the public?

Thanks for any information and assistance you might be able to offer.

      William D Romanski
      Rhode Island

      Dear Mr. Romanski:

Thank you again for your patience.

Our research indicates the parish in Calais met for the first time in 1850, and the parish in Eastport in 1856. Both too early for your research (1820). Before that, the region was served by the Rt. Rev. Alexander Viets Griswold, Bishop of the "Eastern Diocese".

Bishop Griswold's "Official Acts" are located in the Diocese of Massachusetts. http://www.diomass.org/content/archives

I'm sure the archivist there will be able to further your research.

      Good luck!

      Peacefully,
      Barb

    • Hi Bill,
I just came across these 3 items that I had copied from the Anglican (Church of England) records of Elmsville and thought I remembered that Crory was one of your names.

Burials in Parish of St. Patrick taken from the Church Records

#108 Ann Crory aged 86 years of Rolling Dam, formerly of Elmsville. Relict of David Crory (2nd husband) She died 16 Sept 1911, Buried 18 Sept 1911. Interred in Elmsville Cemetery by O. Blackall, Rector

#109 Naomi Carroll aged 57 years of Rolling Dam, formerly of Elmsville, daughter of the above's first husband. She died 18 Dec 1911, Buried 20 Dec 1911. Interred in Elmsville Cemetery by O. Blackall, Rector.

#49 David Crory of Digdeguash, about 85 years. Died 22 Sept 1894, Buried 25 Sept 1894, by James W. Milledge, Rector St. David.

      Any help to you??
      Shirley
    • I looked at the index to the St Croix Courier and did not find the surname CRORY. Is it possible that another spelling exists? I checked CROWLEY but no Sarah Ann is indexed. At the UNB Library, I looked at three Courier (weekly) publications after 16 September 1911 and found no Crory or similarly spelled entry.
