- From Gary Sullivan
Pat Sean O'Sullivan still lives on and works the Sullivan in land in Kilnabrack Upper and Reenanallagane that was bought by the family after land reform. The house the family lived in was down the Reenanallagane Road off to the left on the last trail. It overlooked the mudflats, Dingle Bay and Rossbehy. The family moved from the Black Valley to Glencar during the Famine and to this spot about 1856 or 1857. Farming the land was apparently still tough but the family could subsist on the mollusks that could be taken at the shore. When the tide was low, one could go out on the mudflats and take all the cockles one could eat. There are middens of shells as deep as you can go on the shores here, supposedly made by the starving people who came here to eat during that horrible time.
The house is currenly in ruins, but it used to store hay. The walls and roofline is apparent, but there is no roof. A new house was built later when the family had more money and owned the land. This house was directly in front of the old house, closer to the road. The O'Sullivans of Reenanallagane owned a large tract of land between Reenanallagane and Kilnabrack Lower. Pat Sean is the only Sullivan remaining who is involved in any animal husbandry; he still keeps about 30 cows.
Mary Sullivan Sheehan was a granddaughter of Michael Sullivan, brother of Margaret, James and John. She and her husband owned a shop in Killorglin and also the house in Reenannallagane. By the 1960s both the ruin and the new house were uninhabited. In fact the new house was run down enough that Gary called it "a ruin too." Mary Sheehan sold the new house and about a half acre of land to a couple from France sometime in the 1960s. This act of course caused a rift in the family. It wasn't until 1994 when Gary organized a family reunion in Glenbeigh that the disparate sides of the family spoke. The French couple has been approached to buy back the house that they renovated, but to no avail. The house is called "The Frenchman's House."
The old timers who had lived at Glencar usually insisted on being buried there despite having moved to the shore. So when they died their coffin would be carried by the pall bearers over the mountain to Glencar for burial. Daniel and Mary were probably buried there in an area set aside for the Sullivans.
The Sullivans were Free-Staters as opposed to Republicans.
