Thank you for your posting to my message ref Jeremiah and Sarah McGill(icuddy).
A workmate of mine has just had his book published: "To Pierce The Tyrant's Heart - a military history of the battle for the Eureka Stockade 3 ecember 1854" -Gregory Blake published by Australian Military History Publications. This is the book that interested me in James McGill, and shows the importance of the California Rangers group which he commanded. It also demonstrates how little is known of McGill himself.
James Herbert McGill: His parentage was possibly Jeremiah McGill m. Sarah Leslie (info from James' death certificate) but his daughter?s marriage notice says:
? ... Marie Gertrude, daughter of the late James Herbert McGill, Ballarat, niece of the Rev John McGill, M.A., Professor of Rhetoric, St Louis University, and of Lieutenant ?Colonel McGill, , ....?
There is a chance that he was a "Black sheep of the family", though one report from the time says he arrived with considerable funds. The Rev John was a Jesuit, and through his records I have traced some living relatives, without much new information and some new questions.
James Herbert McGill[icuddy] born 17.7.1831, youngest son of Jeremiah and Lady Sarah Leslie, who went to the USA in 1848.
They refer to the mother as ?Lady? Sarah Leslie, but I cannot yet find her in the peerage. Different dates are given for James? and John?s births. James? death certificate says born Boston USA in 1834, but the family say the parents left for USA in 1848. So far I have not located any death certificates for Jeremiah or Sarah.
Any further information you may come across would be much appreciated.
