Gram had told me before about when she and Gramp went back to New Brunswick for her father's funeral. She told me again today, so I thought I'd write it down.
It was in March. Gram, Gramp and Kip went to Canada for the funeral. On the way back, it started snowing just as they got on Route 9 in Maine. Although they were travelling slowly and carefully, the car slid in the snow and off the road, stopping just before the trees. Neither Gram, Gramp, Kip or the car was hurt. Some passers by ("on the way to work," Gram suggested) stopped to pull the car out. They told Gramp to "take it easy." Back on the road without incident.

He children never needed to see a barber and he cut Mr Boyd's hair as well as his brother Stubby's (Albert). Note jotted on a piece of scrap paper: Main street barber 1912-1913. Chair red velvet. Many years.

Gram said that her father had horses, hens, roosters, cows and pigs. The cows, kept only for milk, would calf every year. She remember that they had a litter of piglets one year when she was vey young.

- I David Johnston of Rollingdam in the Parish of Dumbarton, Retired Farmer, do make and publish this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made.
I appoint my two sons Oscar Johnston and Beriah Johnston, Executors of this Will and I direct them to provide out of my personal estate for my Testamentary expenses and for the settlement of my just debts, if any outstanding at the time of my decease.
I give and devise to my said son Oscar Johnston my lotof land containing about twenty five acres, situate on the south side of the Meadow road in the Parish of Dumbarton, bought by me from Mitchell, and adjoining land now owned by my said son Oscar Johnston.
All the rest of the real estate of which I shall die seized, possessed of, or entitled to, wherever the same may be situate, I give and devise equally to my five sons, Albert, Joseph, Herman, Oscar, and Beriah, and to my two daughters, Ada Chase, wife of George E Chase of St Andrews, and Lucy Eagan, wife of Frank Eagan of Milltown, share and share alike, as tenants in common.
I give and bequeath all of the distributable surplus of my personal property as follows:- To Willard Johnston who has been a member of my family all his life, and with whom my wife and I now reside at Rollingdam, I give his promisory note for One hundred ($100.00) Dollars which I now hold, with all such interest as may have accrued and be payable thereon, and on case he shall have paid off the said note before my decease, I give him the sum of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollards to be paid in cash by my Executors. This payment is to take priority over my other legatees herein named.
All the rest, residue, and remainder of my personal estate, including moneys on hand in Bank or otherwise, held or owned by me and all my personal property, I give and bequeath to my five sons hereinbefore named and to my said two daughters, equally, share and share alike.
Both in respect of my real estate hereby devised and my personal property bequeather by this Will, I direct that in the event of any of my name children predeceasing me, his or her share shall go tohis or her lawful issue, if any, otherwise to and amongst the others of my said sonsand daughters surviving me.
I am not making provision for my wife Isabelle Johnston, by terms of this Will, for the reason that I believe she is amply and comfortably provided for, being intitled to liek maintenance and support on our homestead property at Rollingdam, which has been conveyed to Willard Johnston hereinbefore named, with whom we now reside, also knowing that she has and holds in her own right certain moneys sufficient to provide for all her reasonable wants and requirements and further that she will be entitled to claim and have dower right in such real estate as I may leave.
In witness whereof I have hereuto set my hand this 13th day of July AD 1921 at St Andrews in the said County Charlotte.

- Oscar farmer the land on the Meadow Road and drove a local mail route, but his most lasting exploit was the Last Resort. O.W. had driven a few different cars, Models A and T. A small garage in the field set apart from the house kept each one at their own time out of the weather. Having finally abandoned the last one some time in the 1940s, the garage sat idle. Now Oscar was a man of vision, a man with ideas, and he felt that the little village, if you could call it that, of Rollingdam needed a general store, a place to buy your flour, oats and whatnot. The old car garage was the right place, but the spot wasn?t what he had in mind.
It was likely a fall day when Grandpa Johnson moved the garage. The story survives because the children were all home from school with the measles, and watched the whole show through the windows of the farmhouse. There was a clear spot about a hundred yards up the Meadow Road where Johnson?s General Store would take root. Two teams of horses were attached to the sturdy building, one led by Uncle Bill (Willard Johnson) and one by O W. Oscar?s son Hewitt sat at the peak of the roof and when the time came lifted the bare copper telegraph wires to let the future shop pass through. The building was set down on a primitive foundation of hackmatack trunks, its rear facing the road.
Soon the place was converted into the store and it enjoyed a steady business. Grandpa was a camp cook for hunting expeditions and kept his home base in the store. He baked bread every day, and had ambitions to sell the same in St Andrews, loading it on the train at Hewitt Station. He ran the store successfully for many years and the building still stands.
The place was known as the Last Resort as long as anyone could remember, as a hand painted sign hanging above the door is still in evidence. At this time it was not unusual for local families to have relatives living out West, either in British Columbia, California or Washington. Oscar?s wife Clara had two sisters in British Columbia. When they came to visit they couldn?t stay in the farmhouse, owing to the gaggle of children there. So they would sleep wherever there was room. And they would stay in the store as a last resort. And, of course, it stuck.
