      OVERCOME BY GAS
Man and Woman Found Unconscious in American Hotel.
A man believed to be Michael Leahy of No. 53 Maple street, Holyoke, Mass., and a woman who was identified by members of the police department as Catharine Flynn, a well known rounder, were found overcome by illuminating gas in Room 38 on the fourth floor of the American Hotel yesterday morning about 10 o'clock. They were taken to the Hartford Hospital and Police Surgeon Dickerman, who attended them, said that they would overcome the effects of the poisoning.

The man and woman went to the hospital about 10 o'clock Tuesday and registered as James Larry and wife, and it was said at the hotel that both were sober. The gas was lighted in the room at 12 o'clock when the porter went through the hall and he knocked on the door and told the inmates of the room to extinguish the gas. There was no odor of gas on that floor of the hotel at 4:30, but it was detected about 7 o'clock and an effort was made to locate Mamie Schultz, a chambermaid, made an effort to get into the room at 10 o'clock, but she was unsuccessful and because of the strong odor of gas in that locality she concluded that the gas jet in the room was open, and she notified George T. Arthur, the manager of the hotel. John Murphy, a porter, crawled out on the balcony and went into the room through a window. The man and woman appeared to be dead. The windows in the room were opened and the gas jet, which was on full jet, was turned off. The police were notified and Dr. Dickerman attended the couple, after which they were taken to the hospital. It was said that had the couple been in the room a half hour longer they would have died.

A search was made of the man's clothing and there was found a notice to Michael Leahy, at the address given in Holyoke. It was from the Springfield agency of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, informing Leahy that he had been rejected by the company. The man is about 50 years old and appearances indicate that he is a laborer. He had no money. The belief is that the gas was not put out until daylight and that one of the parties must have blown it out.
