Divisional Lot 4 Samuel Johnson Lot Balltown Scammon Map Designation: No 4 Saml Place 20 3/4 acres, straddling the highway and east of the old highway. Modern Whitefield Tax Map lots that Samuel Place owned, some probably within the bounds of the original Lot 4 (Whitefield Map 020): 025-1-A. 024-1, 035 (part?), 035-A, 036, 034, 024-2 (part?) The claim that Samuel Place purchased from Samuel Johnson in 1805 was ostensibly 40 acres. At the time the parcel fell within the boundaries of Balltown, but when Jefferson was incorporated in 1807, part of the claim extended into Jefferson. In 1816 Samuel Cony Esq was granted all the land in Whitefield east of the Sheepscot River, which included the Johnson farm. Although no deed of Cony's conveying title to Place could be found, it appears Place did purchase the land from the new proprietor some time before 1825 when he sold the land by warranty deed to his son, and possibly before 1819 when another deed from Cony indicated that Place owned the land. Samuel Place's original claim was divided into lots number 4 & 5 in an early 19th Century Survey. Lot 5 was on the River, lot 4 behind it on the opposite side of the highway. When the old road was abandoned, Lot 4 was divided by the new road. The Places continued to possess these lots after the grant to Cony, but as the boundaries of the adjoining lots became more well-defined, Lots 4 & 5 change as a result. Samuel Place and his son Samuel Place also added to their holdings, particularly to the south of the original lot. They acquired all the land from Lots 6 and 9 between the old and the new roads, as well as a parcel to the north and parts of Lot 7 and 6. Later John Plummer and his family lived on the lot, his heirs selling out to Lizzie Clifford in 1890. The Clifford heirs retained the land until 1960 when Eugene Brann bought the property. The land consisted of the whole of Divisional Lot 4, but the dimensions were not specified. The abutters were others who were known to abut Lot 4, but also owned different parcels in the Johnson claim. Also, the deed claimed that the parcel sold in 1866 was 45 acres (Later deeds said 35), although earlier deeds to Lot 4 claimed 25 acres, which was likely accurate. So the 1866 deed probably included another parcel, and judging by the deeds for this 6 acres parcel from Lot 9, the 6 acre parcel was likely conveyed as well. Samuel Place had also purchased the southern 10 acres of the Capen Glidden lot in 1851, which apparently is included here as well. Joseph W Noyes purchased these parcels from Arthur W Davis in 1955. Joseph sold a portion of the Capen Glidden lot to the State of Maine in 1962 for a picnic area. He also sold small lots in Jefferson south of the highway in 1964 and 1973. At his death in 1976, the whole of the estate went to his wife Eunice. In 2007, Eunice quit her claim to her daughter Violet to lots in Jefferson 019-033, 024-009, and in Whitefield 020-037. She died in 2008 and her daughter Violet Hinckley then Knox took over her estate. When did 020-037 become part of the Noyes estate? In 1967, a plan of Rte 17 near the Jefferson line shows Eugene Brann abutting the Joseph W Noyes picnic are to the south, with Noyes to the east and west [Plan Book 14 Page 39], Brann owning or occupying lots 020-037 and 025-001. So, some time between 1967 and 2007, Joseph or Eunice Noyes acquired Whitefield Lot 020-037. I don't find a deed. Checked Indexes for George W, Ruth, William B, and Arthur W Davis through 1953.
